Application Date 2019-04-19 2:14:02
Application Language English
Applicant City Singapore
Applicant State/Province
Applicant Country Singapore
What languages do you speak? English, Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian), Mandarin (Conversational Level)
What is your occupation? Research Associate and Business Development at TitanBlock (Crypto Fund and Consulting Firm)
How many years experience in your field? 1-3
What is the highest degree or level of school you have completed? Master’s degree (for example: MA, MS, MEng, MEd, MSW, MBA)
Please describe your experience in the Crypto/Blockchain space, if any? I first heard about bitcoin in 2014 and lurked online until 2017. I became much more active in 2017, investing in ICOs and going to meetups/conferences, and decided to make it a full time profession in 2018. Still going strong and have complete conviction in this field.
Are you an individual or a group? Group
Node City Singapore
Node State (I have the ability to run a node in Singapore, Jakarta, or Hong Kong. Personally I would prefer to run it in Singapore, but if geographic diversification is a huge concern, please let me know and I could adjust to fit Elixxir's needs)
Node Country Singapore
For which networks Have you ever operated a node? Bitcoin (BTC, BCH, etc), Ethereum (ETH, ETC, etc), SiaCoin and also preparing to run a Cosmos Node
What kind of improvements would you like to see in Elixxir nodes vs. previous the previous nodes you have supported? That all nodes are treated fairly and equally. There is a huge problem in distribution in some other networks, for example in Cosmos where I am preparing to launch a node as well, the huge funds that participated in the fundraiser have a huge advantage over the others in validating transaction on the network simply because they bought in early and thus have a much higher percentage of the crypto asset; leading other people to prefer to delegate their stake. It becomes very centralized, so i'm glad Elixxir is going out of its way to filter through node applicants and select.
What are potential setbacks preventing you from operating an Elixxir node?
What is a reasonable maximum connection speed on which you could operate a BetaNet node in your geographic region? (Where 0 = 10 Megabits/second, and 100 = 10 Gigabits/second) 50
What is a reasonable uptime estimate you can provide for your BetaNet node? (As a percentage) 95
Please estimate the cost of electricity in the geographic area where your BetaNet node will be running. . 0.07 to 0.08 kwH for Singapore
On a monthly basis, how much time can you publicly commit to dedicating toward governance if you were selected as a BetaNet node operator? (Where 0 = 1 hour/month, and 100 = 20 hours/month) 75
If you were selected to run a BetaNet node, would it run on your own hardware or be deployed to cloud-based servers? Cloud-Based Servers
In what type of environment would this server be located? Datacenter
Do you have past experience deploying hardware servers in a datacenter? No
Do you already own sufficient hardware to meet the published Elixxir BetaNet node specifications? No
Yes (Please list specs)
Do you have hardware you would like to use but does not meet the stated BetaNet node specs? If so, please provide specs on that hardware below: -
Do you have past experience deploying servers to cloud-based services? Yes (please specify)
Yes (please specify) I don't, but I have a technical partner that does.
Why do you want to be a node? I am a huge fan of the project and am looking to support it. David Chaum's early work is not to be looked down upon and I believe that this project of his will likely be big in the future; of course I want to support, but as a node I am honest in saying I have financial incentives in supporting Elixxir as well.
How did you originally hear about Elixxir? Word of Mouth
Which current Elixxir communities are you a member of? Telegram, Medium
Are you an active member of those communities? No
What specifically, interests you about the Elixxir platform? I do believe Elixxir's consensus protocol is carefully thought out and it's desire to be a truly decentralized and PRIVATE cryptocurreny is legitimate. Privacy is a huge concern of mine, and i think the message mixing is a novel way to increase performance while encoding privacy. The equality given to all nodes is also something that particularly appeals to me (I mentioned the problem with Cosmos earlier on), in that no nodes are disadvantages; this closely mimics early Bitcoin, as it means centralization (if any) will be extremely difficult to manipulate or take a long time to occur.
Outside of Elixxir communities, are you an active participant in other node or developer community groups? If so, which ones? Cosmos as of right now.
Have you ever attended a blockchain conference? If so, which one(s)? Consensys Singapore Sora Summit Beyond Blocks Many others to be sure, but I can't remember the names of the top of my head.
As part of growing the Elixxir community, are you willing to create content as part of operating an Elixxir BetaNet node? Examples would be node setup & on-boarding review vlog post, bi-weekly twitter update, medium review of on-going node operational process, etc. Yes (how much content on a monthly basis?)
If yes, how much content on a monthly basis? Depends on the financials and the ability to hire staff, but if by myself maybe once a month.
What is the difference between decentralized networks and distributed networks, and where on the decentralization spectrum do you sit? To me, the difference is where the "authority" or "decision making power" comes from. Distributed networks just mean the stakeholders and information flows are "distributed" and not located in one place, but it could still be that the power originates in several specific points. Decentralized is that, but more specifically refers to "decentralization of power/authority" as well, and that the decision making process is more spread out. It is definitely a spectrum, but if you were to imagine a line spectrum going DistributedDecentralized, i would probably be about 5/8 of the way to decentralized, if that makes any sense. It's important that some level of decentralization is achieved, but if it's completely decentralized decision making processes can end up being very slow and cumbersome.
As best as you can given currently available information, please describe the value proposition of the Elixxir platform and how it differs from other current blockchain solutions. 1) Very different and carefully thought consensus protocol (not pure slapping an additive to PoS, PoW or PoWhatever), meaning nodes are not disadvantage and incentivized to maintain good up time service 2) Privacy by default (message mixing) 3) Doing one thing at a time and one thing well ( a cryptocurrency) and not mixing mumbo jumbo contracts and Dapps when that's not its goal
Privacy by Default is a goal of the Elixxir Platform. In your opinion, why is Privacy by Default critical for the future of the internet? Privacy is a fundamental human right, like freedom of speech. Full stop. Just because not having privacy doesn't hurt you, does not mean that you should not always have it. This is painfully obvious in less developed countries where privacy is completely exploited (where I am very familiar and have grown up with).
