We have also received node applications from areas of conflict such as Ukraine (I realize Kyiv is several hundred miles from the Donbas region)… are the experiences of these applicants something we should prioritize for the BetaNet?

The Ukraine’s monthly salary hovers around $300 US. Most people cannot afford covering their monthly hydro and food bills, especially after IMF pushed for the pension reform and 35% increase in the natural gas in order to bring the costs to European standards. We are not even speaking about the conflict region. The population is just not self sufficient and most youngsters are leaving the country for a better life in US or Europe. In my opinion, when looking at countries involved in geopolitical conflicts, only the applications submitted by long time IT/Crypto professionals, people involved in University Research, long time miners or data center specialists should be credited. Otherwise the stability of the nodes/network may be compromised, when said Govt decides to stop the internet traffic under Martial Law.

Credit to Intellinews :
“Ukraine’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in current prices in US dollar terms stood at $2,964.193 in 2018, according to October’s update of the World Economic Outlook published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). That makes Ukraine the poorest country in Europe, behind Moldova ($3,226.717), Belarus ($6,020.043) and Russia ($10,950.492).”

Add the potential conflict on top of it, and it is a recipe for disaster.

I’m sympathetic to your concerns about network uptime, although Ukraine has faster internet than most of Eastern Europe. I’m skeptical about the IMF GDP data; Ukrainians are notorious for under-reporting their income, and in my visits to Kyiv I’ve seen plenty of signs of prosperity. I wouldn’t be surprised if rural areas face much greater economic hardship.

I agree Peter that Professionals are Professionals no matter where they create. :+1:

If internet speed is important, please also consider Ukraine’s neighbouring country Moldova. According to Wikipedia:
" Internet in Moldova is one of the fastest and cheapest in the world. The country ranks 3rd in the world by gigabit coverage with around 90% of the population having the option to subscribe to a gigabit plan."
