Distribution refers to the spatial spread of nodes. I believe networks should be as decentralized as possible for the required level of speed and scalability of the service they aim at providing. But with a constrain: there should be a clear target level of security, privacy and robustness, which should not be threatened by increased centralization for speed and scalability.|

This is my application. I’m an enthusiast and advocate of both blockchain technology and online privacy. I’ve been a long-term supporter of several initiatives for mass adoption of encrypted email and anonymous browsing, and I’d be thrilled to contribute to what I believe will be the next level of online private interactions: trust-less distributed systems implementing messaging and smart contracts allowing for metadata encryption. As probably the most advance exponent of the latter, Elixxir may become one of the strongest bastions against online privacy threats, such as the recently known “ghost proposal”. For that we need a widespread, diverse and strong network!
I mention that I have a PhD and work as a researcher in computational population genetics, but I did not say that I also have an engineering degree and that I develop and optimize C++ simulation software, which I frequently run in high performance computing facilities, as part of my research work.
In addition to frequently running heavily parallelized jobs in clusters, I actually DO have some past experience deploying servers to cloud-based services, running BOINC in AWS and Microsoft Azure instances.
If I were selected I’d swiftly purchase a server of the precise required specifications, which I understand may change from now to the time of actual deployment (especially in terms of GPU). My available bandwidth is symmetrical 600Mb/s.
I would certainly engage with future Elixxir node community members, attend meetups, and help provide feedback to the core team (I said “no” in my application, which I regret).

I would certainly do my best, Trail21. I’m really excited about the potential opportunity to contribute to a blockchain project aiming at a rare but necessary combination of speed, privacy (including metadata!!) and robustness. I’m an advocate of encrypted communications and online privacy, and I hope Elixxir will fill an empty niche in this space. Communication and education are ever more important for supporting online privacy and freedom, and node runners could certainly play an important role in those fronts.

Have you ever thought that transactions on most blockchains are in principle anonymous but never private? And that the anonymity is actually easily lost through metadata analysis? Metadata in our online communications and transactions carry tons of personally identifiable information (see for instance this research paper: www . pnas . org/content/113/20/5536)
Elixxir proposition is a strong and important one, metadata encryption in blockchain transactions is the only way towards anonymity in distributed ledger applications. A proposition that will likely face opposition, support from a widespread and diverse community will be required for robust deployment!
