Applicant Country United Kingdom
What languages do you speak? English
What is your occupation? Executive Car Sales/Cryptocurrency Miner
How many years experience in your field? 16+
What is the highest degree or level of school you have completed? Some college
Please describe your experience in the Crypto/Blockchain space, if any? Cryptocurrency Miner. Although 2017 pretty much wiped me & life savings out. I might need some assistance purchasing hardware required for running your node, but I do have a 50mbps internet connection. What I don't know I can learn pretty quick.
Are you an individual or a group? Individual
Node City Portadown
Node State County Armagh
Node Country Northern Ireland (UK)
For which networks Have you ever operated a node? Not sure about this, possibly Monero as I ran full wallet
What kind of improvements would you like to see in Elixxir nodes vs. previous the previous nodes you have supported? I like easy informative GUI setup no need for complexity these days, plus a GUI allows further testing for final product
What are potential setbacks preventing you from operating an Elixxir node? Currently I'm pretty broke, waiting for the next market bull run to recover financially, so I may need assistance with hardware costs to run a node. I currently have a 5 year old Alienware Laptop, which used to be the best but has run out it's life use now so wouldn't be on par with your spec requirements. I never leave my house so I'm always here to monitor hardware/network, my wife shops and I only leave house to get hair cut once every couple months. It's a pretty happy lifestyle, although in Ireland we could really do with more sunshine.
What is a reasonable maximum connection speed on which you could operate a BetaNet node in your geographic region? (Where 0 = 10 Megabits/second, and 100 = 10 Gigabits/second) 40
What is a reasonable uptime estimate you can provide for your BetaNet node? (As a percentage) 99
Please estimate the cost of electricity in the geographic area where your BetaNet node will be running. . $0.21 per kw
On a monthly basis, how much time can you publicly commit to dedicating toward governance if you were selected as a BetaNet node operator? (Where 0 = 1 hour/month, and 100 = 20 hours/month) 100
If you were selected to run a BetaNet node, would it run on your own hardware or be deployed to cloud-based servers? Hardware
In what type of environment would this server be located? Personal Home
Do you have past experience deploying hardware servers in a datacenter? No
Do you already own sufficient hardware to meet the published Elixxir BetaNet node specifications? No
Yes (Please list specs)
Do you have hardware you would like to use but does not meet the stated BetaNet node specs? If so, please provide specs on that hardware below: I would need to purchase new hardware
Do you have past experience deploying servers to cloud-based services? No
Yes (please specify)
Why do you want to be a node? I've never been this involved in a blockchain project before other than mining Bitcoin/Ethereum/Monero/Nimiq/Zcash etc using GPU,CPU,ASIC miners. I've been watching the Elixxir project evolve and I feel my free time could be better used supporting a good project such as Elixxir. I'm doing nothing else right now, just waiting for bull market. I try sleep 12 broken hours to time-warp ahead to when bull market returns, so essentially 1 year waiting becomes only 6 months....it's pretty clever time travel when you think of it...just a bit boring
How did you originally hear about Elixxir? Twitter
Which current Elixxir communities are you a member of? Twitter
Are you an active member of those communities? Yes
What specifically, interests you about the Elixxir platform? It's a combination of very strong team members & in my opinion a project with an actual real chance to produce what everyone else has failed to do thus far: Speed, privacy, and security on a global consumer scale.
Outside of Elixxir communities, are you an active participant in other node or developer community groups? If so, which ones? I tend to zoom in on projects of most and gloss over to see if I find scams to warn others about, if i like the project i will spend some time going over products etc to see if I find minor bugs or if published English text needs corrected
Have you ever attended a blockchain conference? If so, which one(s)? No, too expensive to be a tourist. I do see the potential of networking with others in same field building projects, but as for me i would just be wasting money and other peoples valuable time.
As part of growing the Elixxir community, are you willing to create content as part of operating an Elixxir BetaNet node? Examples would be node setup & on-boarding review vlog post, bi-weekly twitter update, medium review of on-going node operational process, etc. Yes (how much content on a monthly basis?)
If yes, how much content on a monthly basis? But I'm not one of these people that likes being on camera etc, but if equipment was provided to produce a good vlog etc then I suppose I could always try if it helps.
What is the difference between decentralized networks and distributed networks, and where on the decentralization spectrum do you sit? I'm all for Decentralised networks if they can exist, currently most seem to adopt a hybrid approach between Decentralised & Distributed to avoid conflict with government. Government will be a bigger & bigger issue moving forward now that they have seen the brilliance of Blockchain, now the Government's will come for their slice of the pie/tax & will force more & more regulations onto Blockchain projects. Just look at what the Australian government just voted through in regards to encryption backdoors after some arm twisting from USA Intel agency's. It's going to be tough to be 100% decentralised. I keep an eye on Monero as the "Tip of the Spear" forging a path ahead.
As best as you can given currently available information, please describe the value proposition of the Elixxir platform and how it differs from other current blockchain solutions. At this point it's hard to know for sure, what I can read in text is impressive, but so many others have come before shouting about 1 million+ tx/s speeds, but I still see projects like Ethereum & EOS playing with around 2000-6000 tx/s. So really the proof is in the eating, everyone is waiting for an honest project, well supported, well funded, transparent, to launch and slap everyone down and show how it's done. I believe Elixxir is this Project everyone is waiting for. I don't have much else these days except for the belief that Blockchain and projects such as Elixxir will succeed.
Privacy by Default is a goal of the Elixxir Platform. In your opinion, why is Privacy by Default critical for the future of the internet? Because humans by nature take the easiest route. Zcash is a great example, the option is there for privacy but no one opts for it as its not the easiest/cheapest option. Monero is another great example and why it's currently the best privacy coin existing, by default it's private and why it's used. Monero's problem has been funding, it would be way ahead if it had the Zooko slush fund, so as it stands Monero struggles to gain footing into third party wallets, commerce, exchanges. Privacy is the right of every human to retain. Government/Coinbase & companies like Facebook & Google have for too long now been abusing this human right. It's time for this abuse to stop.
