What is the highest degree or level of school you have completed? Some college
Please describe your experience in the Crypto/Blockchain space, if any? Been in the blockchain space since 2013 and created various cypto startups since then including being the co-founder of [a protocol]. Also been one of the first 10 founding steward nodes on the Sovrin identity network which i still maintain. My primary focus areas and experience to date in the crypto space is related to self-sovereign identity and sustainable development. Also a member of the South African Financial Blockchain Consortium where i help spearhead the digital identity work stream.
Are you an individual or a group? Individual
Node City Cape Town
Node State Western Cape
Node Country South Africa
For which networks Have you ever operated a node? Bitcoin (BTC, BCH, etc), Ethereum (ETH, ETC, etc), Sovrin
What kind of improvements would you like to see in Elixxir nodes vs. previous the previous nodes you have supported? Operational Dashboard in terms of security and health of the overall network and a node dashboard
What are potential setbacks preventing you from operating an Elixxir node? N/A
What is a reasonable maximum connection speed on which you could operate a BetaNet node in your geographic region? (Where 0 = 10 Megabits/second, and 100 = 10 Gigabits/second) 25
What is a reasonable uptime estimate you can provide for your BetaNet node? (As a percentage) 97
Please estimate the cost of electricity in the geographic area where your BetaNet node will be running. . Block 1(0-50 kWh) is set at R90c per kWh. • Block 2 (51-350 kWh) will be R112c per kWh. • Block 3 (351-600 kWh is set at R165c per kWh. • Block 4 ( more than 600 kWh) is set at R194c per kWh.
On a monthly basis, how much time can you publicly commit to dedicating toward governance if you were selected as a BetaNet node operator? (Where 0 = 1 hour/month, and 100 = 20 hours/month) 50
If you were selected to run a BetaNet node, would it run on your own hardware or be deployed to cloud-based servers? Both
In what type of environment would this server be located? Datacenter
Do you have past experience deploying hardware servers in a datacenter? Yes (please describe)
Do you already own sufficient hardware to meet the published Elixxir BetaNet node specifications? No
Yes (Please list specs)
Do you have hardware you would like to use but does not meet the stated BetaNet node specs? If so, please provide specs on that hardware below: N/A
Do you have past experience deploying servers to cloud-based services? Yes (please specify)
Yes (please specify) Been running and managing fairly large infrastructures on Google Cloud, AWS and smaller servers on Digital Ocean, Heroku etc
Why do you want to be a node? I like to be part of the growth of new technologies and actively playing a role from an early stage. As with the Sovrin node i believe in the technology and the overall vision and that makes it a natural fit to also want to run a node on such a network like Elixxir.
How did you originally hear about Elixxir? Coindesk
Which current Elixxir communities are you a member of? Telegram, Medium, Twitter
Are you an active member of those communities? No
What specifically, interests you about the Elixxir platform? Scaleability, speed, and privacy
Outside of Elixxir communities, are you an active participant in other node or developer community groups? If so, which ones? Sovrin
Have you ever attended a blockchain conference? If so, which one(s)? Devcon - Prague Rebooting Web of Trust - San Francisco Internet Identity Workshop - San Francisco Blockchain Africa Conference - South Africa Future Blockchain Summit - Dubai 9984 Conference - Berlin
As part of growing the Elixxir community, are you willing to create content as part of operating an Elixxir BetaNet node? Examples would be node setup & on-boarding review vlog post, bi-weekly twitter update, medium review of on-going node operational process, etc. Yes (how much content on a monthly basis?)
If yes, how much content on a monthly basis? 1 Medium post and bi-weekly twitter with a vlog
What is the difference between decentralized networks and distributed networks, and where on the decentralization spectrum do you sit? Distributed is where nodes / processing / storage etc is distributed across geographic regions or even within the same region. This however don't necessarily mean that the distributed architecture is not owned by a centralised / single entity. Decentralised is when the nodes / processing / storage etc is decentralised across many nodes but no node can by itself perform all the processing and these networks are also not under the control of centralised / single entity that makes it censorship resistant. I truly believe in decentralised technologies and the power it provides individuals, especially in terms of self-sovereign identity and everything related to one's personal life.
As best as you can given currently available information, please describe the value proposition of the Elixxir platform and how it differs from other current blockchain solutions. Elixxir is a fast and highly scaleable blockchain with inherent privacy by default. Most other blockchain don't have scaleability or fast processing capabilities required for real world large scale applications. Various research initiatives are underway to try and make these blockchains more scaleable. Elixxir is developed with speed, scaleability and privacy by design. This makes it an extremely attractive value proposition compared to most other blockchain solutions.
Privacy by Default is a goal of the Elixxir Platform. In your opinion, why is Privacy by Default critical for the future of the internet? As a self-sovereign advocate and Sovrin node operator (which also adopts the privacy by default approach) it is highly appealing as i believe humans have the right to privacy and protection of their personal information. If we don't take control of our own privacy with solutions like Elixxir we will unfortunately continue to be controlled and owned by large organisations, governments etc.

Agreed, good candidate for the team to consider if they decided to increase coverage in what appears to be a somewhat under-represented region.
